Series: Luis Palau | My Life in Seven Words, Part 1

Since Luis Palau’s cancer diagnosis, he has written a book.  This week on “Reaching your World,” Luis will share some thoughts from that book as he focuses on a couple of words:  delight and surrender.

Admit your Pride Friday, July 5, 2019

Shortly before her twenty-first birthday, Michelle decided to, quote, “leave God and make my own way in the world,” unquote. Years later, she came back to God, but not without a struggle. The issue for her, as it is for most, was a five-letter word. In her own words:  “Pride is equal to saying ‘I can do this all myself, thank you very much. I have my best interests in mind.’ I believe that this emotion is the opposite of trust. Trust is exhibited best when we are completely incapable of providing something for ourselves—and believe that God has our best interests at heart. To ‘wait on the Lord’ [Psalm 27:14] shows not only patience, but trust. Belief. Faith."

What a joy to read Michelle’s letter! What’s remarkable to me is that she doesn’t blame God or others for her choice to walk away from God. Instead, Michelle points to her own pride.

It’s one thing to admit that I’m a rugged individualist. It’s another to admit my pride, yet in the end I must. We all must. Proverbs 16:18 confirms it. “Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall.”  And we’ve all experienced it. In the end, it’s our pride that must fall.

Surrender - 2 Thursday, July 4, 2019

One of my all-time favorite Scriptures is 2 Corinthians 5:14-15. It says, Jesus Christ “died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who, for their sakes, both died and was raised again.”

Some people find it easy to give money to the cause of Christ but can’t imagine giving their time—or worse, risking their reputation! Others find volunteering quite easy, but their wallets have not been converted. Are we dedicating ourselves to Jesus Christ and His kingdom as whole persons? Is all of us—mind, body, soul, and spirit—being laid at the feet of Jesus?

Yes, He asks for all, but only after He Himself had given all. Your role is to simply obey the Lord Jesus Christ and follow His principles for your life.

Ask the Lord what He wants you to give today. Is it time? Money? Words? Thanks? Ask Him and ask yourself if there’s anything you’re holding back from the Lord. A nudge from the Spirit, joyfully received and obeyed, can become an avalanche of God’s super blessings. I’m praying you’ll experience the deep peace and the grace of giving it all to the Lord, and bless the people around you.

Surrender - 1 Wednesday, July 3, 2019

If I were to summarize my life in a handful of words, “surrender” is near the top of the list. It’s why I love Romans 12:1. It says: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
When I was eighteen, I’d read about a missionary who’d contracted leprosy. I was haunted by the story. One day, I felt the Lord asking: Luis, are you willing to give your life for the sake of others? Are you willing to even get leprosy for Me?

Finally, peace replaced my tension, and I knew the honest answer. "Yes, Lord, I’ll do whatever You ask. Even if it means risking leprosy for the sake of the Good News, I’ll do it." It was a moment of surrender. A moment of becoming a “living sacrifice.”

The concept of giving all for the Lord was not abstract to me. Before my father’s death, he showed me the power that comes when a person says, “Everything I have is for the Lord.” Thinking of my father forces me to consider what areas of my life I am holding back from the Lord. Perhaps you should consider it too. There is no better time to surrender than right now, and so reach your world.

Delight - 2 Tuesday, July 2, 2019

One of my all-time favorite verses is Psalm 37:4. It says: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” When we delight in the Lord, He places desires in our hearts that He plans to fulfill anyway. The desires of God’s heart become the desires of our hearts. Extraneous, carnal, egotistical things fall away. You focus on the delight.

I am months, maybe weeks, away from heaven. The only thing I can say to you is, “Draw near to God.” Delight in Him. Let the stream of the Holy Spirit’s work carry you to the heart of the Father. In you is the life of Jesus Christ, who intercedes for us. How amazing that is!

God’s still, small voice says to me, “Stay, Luis. Know me a little better here.” So I try to obey. I sit. I listen to God’s Word like I have not done in ages, with a freshness that is given depth by the realization that my faith will soon become sight. I listen carefully and personally, not merely to teach others but to be taught myself.

God wants to meet you. Will you make room for delight today? Sit down. Get quiet. Open God’s Word. Thank Him. I’m praying you’ll experience God’s joy filling you once again today.

Delight - 1 Monday, July 1, 2019

If I were to summarize my life in a handful of words, “delight” jumps to the top of the list. That’s why I love Psalm 16:11. It says: “You [Lord] make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

All of the best periods of my life have been times I simply delighted in the Lord. He is my loving Father, He is my kind Master, He’s the One with greater patience than we can imagine. Joy, full blessing, laughter—those are the hallmarks of our relationship with God.

It is possible to obey and serve Him without delighting in Him. It is possible to forget that the crux of it all is this: we’ve received good news from a good God. True, unfading joy comes only from delighting in His presence.

Psalm 37:23 says, "The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.” You and I continue to be called into God’s delight. Are you delighting yourself in Him today? Are you close to the One who has defeated the power and fear of death? Turn to Jesus. Delight in Him and He will bless you tremendously in the days ahead.
