Series: Luis Palau | Looking for a Hero

When you hear the word “hero,” what do you think of?  This week on “Reaching your World with Luis Palau” Luis talks about our need for a true hero who can rescue us – our Savior, Jesus Christ.

An Everyday Hero Friday, August 24, 2018

One of my biggest heroes is my father-in-law, Robert Levy. He’s a hero because he is faithful to turn nearly every conversation to eternal matters. He doesn’t “make small talk.” For him, every interaction is an opportunity to boldly proclaim Jesus Christ.

The other day the two of us spent a week together.  A worker in the hotel where we stayed didn’t know Jesus. Robert proclaimed to the man, “Friend, before I leave at the end of the week, you are going to become a Christian.” The last day we were there, Robert pulled the man aside and explained the Gospel. At the end of their conversation, the man prayed to receive Jesus Christ.  I couldn’t believe it! My father-in-law had the faith to believe this man would come to know Jesus and the boldness to act on it.

Boldness isn’t plowing people over. Boldness is believing by faith that God is going to work and then acting on that faith. It’s living in confidence that God is alive and doing miracles and wants to use us! In Acts 4 the believers prayed, “Oh Lord […] enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.” May that be our prayer as well. And this week, let’s reach out to someone in faith and boldness. They just may come to faith in Jesus Christ.

You Aren't the Solution Thursday, August 23, 2018

Have you ever noticed what the most prominent and popular section is in many bookstores? It’s the self-help section. How to lose weight. How to be happy. How to find a man or woman. How to make more money. The problem with this, however, is that oftentimes, we are the problem. I’m so thankful that the Bible doesn’t tell me that I am the solution to the problems I create. As a sinner by nature and choice, I don’t need to look inward for a solution. I need a solution outside of myself. I need a Savior. I don’t need more self-help. I need God’s help. And God is graciously available to us.

And you know, I think that’s why sharing the love of Jesus with everyone we meet is the most kind and loving action we can ever take. It’s why the Good News is truly Good News. Because Jesus paid it all. He said, “It is finished.” We just have to believe it! He did all the work, and he will do all the work in and through you and me. Christ is the only one who can truly make you new. No one can truly “help themselves”. As Lee Strobel said, “Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good. He came to make dead people alive.” All the self-help reading in the world could never accomplish that. Who do you know who needs to hear the life-giving, Good News gospel of Jesus Christ today?

We Need a Hero Wednesday, August 22, 2018

C.S. Lewis wrote, “Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.”

And you know, I think that’s true. While there are truly heroic people today, oftentimes, they don’t seem to be the people celebrated in our culture. It seems the heroes go quietly about their heroism, and our young people go on with their lives without ever hearing these stories. I think an important part of equipping the next generation is to tell them the stories of the great Christian heroes, past and present. We need to fill their minds with rich inspiration. From the heroes of Scripture, to the early disciples, missionaries, martyrs, godly business persons and more. We need to give them something to strive for and people to follow as examples. Paul told Timothy, “follow me as I follow Christ.”

Are you giving young people stories of heroism to inspire their faith? That will be a powerful way to equip the next generation to reach their world.

Why we Lie Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to lie? It’s no wonder, since Satan is referred to in the Bible as the “Father of Lies.” I’m sure nothing gives Satan greater satisfaction than seeing people everywhere, every day, telling little lies- even those seemingly innocent lies of omission. I read an interesting article recently titled, “Why People Lie” and the author offered several top reasons, “To avoid punishment. To save face. To avoid taking responsibility. To shift blame. To avoid confrontation. To get one’s way for personal gain. To be nice. To make yourself feel better. To protect your positive sense of identity. And to avoid uncomfortable situations or questions.”

Wow! We get very creative in justifying ourselves, don’t we? I think it’s important that you and I tell the truth with those around us. Jesus Christ is “the truth.” He alone can set us free from the need to constantly bend the truth. We need to share His truth with the world, so more people will be set free to become truth-tellers themselves.
Who can you share this freedom-giving truth with today?

Our Unheroic Age Monday, August 20, 2018

I was reading a recent article by Warren Kozak about our “unheroic age.” The article was written after another athlete’s use of performance-enhancing drugs was made public. In this article the author lamented the lack of real-life, everyday heroes as role models for our children, saying, “forget about athletes as role models. It would just be nice if there were more fathers in the house.”  Kozack wrote about the public downfalls of today’s would-be heroes. But the author remembered the heroes of his childhood as the more ordinary kind- a Boy Scout leader, teacher, and others, writing, “Not one of them walked with a swagger. They were the most understated men, who rarely, if ever, talked about their experiences.”

If you’re looking to reach your world, there is a serious void in many young people’s lives. You can be the one to show them a constancy of life by simply being there. And you can share with them the only hero truly worthy of the title- Jesus Christ. People will always let us down. We are a fallen race!  Young people are looking for a hero and many are having a difficult time finding one. Share with them the Good News today. Jesus is the “author and perfector of our faith.” Introduce a friend to Him. You’ll be glad you did.
